Metz 37 opens up about growing up with a disinterested father the poverty her family faced while living in Florida and tells of the struggles in her own marriage in This Is Me: Loving the Person You Are Today. The actress also writes about a front yard fist fight she had with her sister in front of the neighbors on Christmas Eve and how she used to wander grocery stores when she was eight years old because she didn't want to be home alone. Her memoir was exclusively obtained by DailyMail.com ahead of its March 27 publication. This Is Us star Chrissy Metz opens up about growing up with a disinterested father and an abusive stepfather in her new memoir This Is Me: Loving the Person You Are Today Metz (right as a child) was born to Denise and Mark Metz in Homestead Florida. When she was six months old her parents moved her and her two older siblings Monica (center) and Phillip (left) to Japan for a Naval assignment Metz was born to Denise and Mark Metz in Homestead Florida before the family including two older siblings Monica and Phillip moved to Japan when the future actress was six months old for a Naval assignment. She recalls in her memoir that she never 'bonded' with Mark - she doesn't call her father 'dad' - and that she was hesitant to use his last name when she made it in Hollywood. The plus-sized actress claims that that the only time he gave her a compliment was when she was seven years old during a fishing trip. 'I caught seven rainbow trout that day handing each to Phillip or my father who joined in' Metz writes. 'It was such a special moment because Mark was actually talking to me and even seemed impressed. 'I didn't see my own accomplishment; I saw my father's reaction to my accomplishment.' It was just months later that Mark and Metz's mother's relationship fell apart and the sailor was caught buying a necklace for another woman. Denise told her children that they were moving back to Florida while Mark would move to Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean for a new assignment. The same day that the divorce was finalized Mark married a woman named Judy Metz writes. The This Is Us star was eight years old when she left Japan. She saw her father once more on a camping trip when she was nine but then didn't see him again until she was 21 years old at a party for her older brother's baby. Metz landed her dream role as Kate Pearson in This Is Us after struggling in Hollywood for years. She's pictured above in the show with her co-star Justin Hartley who plays Kate's brother Kevin Pearson 'Mark is a stranger to me and I had absolutely no idea how to magically bridge the gulf between us' she writes. Mark disputes this version of events telling DailyMail.com: 'Did I abandon her? No! I didn't abandon anybody. If she never contacts me that's her business.' When Metz her mother and siblings moved back to Gainesville Florida they faced years of poverty during which they faced regular power outages lived in a trailer park and Denise would skip meals so her children wouldn't go hungry. While Denise worked and her siblings were in school Metz often walked to the closest grocery store and wandered the aisles simply because she 'didn't want to be alone'. Shortly after they returned to Florida Denise had another child with a man she met working at a grocery store but he disappeared after learning of her pregnancy. Metz's mother eventually met Crayton Hodge who would become the children's stepfather - a man Metz now calls 'Trigger'. While she doesn't detail it in her new memoir Metz claims that she suffered years of abuse from Hodge and had to be weighed regularly when she was living with him. In an exclusive interview with DailyMail.com Hodge said last year that he 'never put any pressure on [Metz] to eat differently or work out'. Metz disagrees with this in her memoir saying: 'Whaaat? I just didn't know what do do with that [claim]. He thinks that he said I could eat whatever I wanted and yet he weighed me constantly? Wow. Okay.' Metz said that she has always had a strained relationship with her father Mark Metz (pictured above) and that they hardly speak to each other When Metz graduated high school she continued to live at home often babysat her younger two half-sisters Morgana and Abigail and worked at a local preschool. But it was at a casting call in Orlando that Morgana begged Metz to take her to that the This Is Us actress was finally discovered. Metz sang Reflection from hit Disney film Mulan to a casting agent after being asked to audition while she was in the waiting room. Suddenly one of the women working the casting call asked Metz if she could be her manager. Metz eventually became the woman's assistant working on her acting career on the side and moved out to Los Angeles during a pilot season while she and the woman's other clients auditioned for roles. 'People as how I was brave enough to make the leap to go out for pilot season and the truth is that I was desperate' Metz writes in her memoir. 'I was bored with my life and I knew that if I stayed in Gainesville it would be a vortex I'd never leave. 'I might have also been in denial because I don't think I fully understood that I was leaving Gainesville for good.' During pilot season Metz had auditions for two roles but wasn't cast in either. 'I had already lost fifty pounds before moving to LA per my manager's suggestion but it became clear to me that I should either lose more weight or stay the butt of the joke' Metz writes. She adds: 'Back then there were even fewer roles written for people of size. You were a size zero or a sight gag.' While she doesn't detail it in her new memoir Metz claims that she suffered years of abuse from her stepfather Crayton Hodge (left with Metz's stepsister Rebecca Livingston) and had to be weighed regularly when she was living with him Metz is pictured above front left with her mom Denise left sister Monica back halfsister Morgana center and family friends. In her book Metz tells the story of a time when she got into a fist fight with Morgana on their front lawn on Christmas Eve The first Christmas she was in Los Angeles Metz used her savings to visit her family in Florida. Metz said she was 'feeling her LA self' when she decided to give her mother an early present on Christmas Eve - a 'beautiful suede jacket' that she wanted Denise to wear to midnight mass. Her younger sister Morgana was annoyed that their mother got to open a gift early and called Metz a 'fat b'. Metz said 'that kind of thing wasn't going to hurt me anymore' and agreed with her sister saying 'you're right'. 'This set her off and she lunged at me' Metz writes. 'As we fought basically flailing our arms at each other my mom began to yell "Take this s outside!"'. Metz says she and her sister spilled on to the front yard 'terrifying the neighbors' by turning it into a 'boxing ring'. She recalls yelling: 'I have my audition for Hairspray! Do not f my face!' Her sister responded: 'I hate you.' Their mother eventually broke up the fight telling everyone to get in the car for midnight mass. Once in the car Metz and Morgana grabbed each others hands and apologized. When Metz returned to Los Angeles after Christmas she continued to push her acting career to the side and focused on her work as an assistant instead. She was able to sit in on acting classes and meet other aspiring actors and became an agent herself. It was then in 2006 that she joined an internet dating site and met British freelance screenwriter Martyn Eaden who lived in the English city of Sheffield South Yorkshire at the time. All of Metz's sisters have now visited her in Los Angeles. She's pictured above center with Abigail (left) Monica (second left) her mother Denise (right) and Morgana (front in white) Metz and her ex-husband Martyn Eaden split up more than three years ago. She is now dating cameraman Josh Stancil (left) The pair corresponded over email for several months before Eaden visited Los Angeles. He continued to visit her in the United States as she didn't have the funds to travel to England and a year into their relationship Eaden proposed. The pair tied the knot in a small ceremony in Santa Barbara California - an event neither of their families could attend due to travel costs. After Metz landed a role on My Name is Earl as a cheerleader named 'Chunk' she bought two tickets to Florida so Eaden could meet her family. She writes however that Eaden who is quiet and reserved didn't get along with her loud and outgoing family. The couple's relationship quickly deteriorated over the years with neither comfortably opening up to the other and each focusing on their own career. Metz started going to Overeating Anonymous meetings almost every day while Eaden decided to start hiking with a female co-worker - something his wife got angry at him about. 'The guilt [of my anger] didn't leave me' Metz writes. 'I was trying so hard to get ahold of my relationship with my body and break my habit of eating my emotions and of equating food with sharing love. I didn't know how to spend time with Marty without using.' It was after a visit from Eaden's parents that the couple decided it was time to divorce in 2013. Upon returning from a party for Metz's friend Metz asked Eaden if he still wanted to be with her. She recalls him saying: 'Everything is about you. Chrissy you are as narcissistic as you are selfish. From the beginning everything has been about you.' Metz says his comments 'felt like a slap' but wanted to handle the divorce 'in the most caring healthy way possible'. The split was finalized in 2014. Eaden and Metz are still friends and text regularly the This is Us actress says. 'We're just not the right fit' Metz writes. 'But I love him and I'm always checking in on him. I am still working on being a better ex-wife than I was a wife.' In the years after her divorce Metz landed a spot on American Horror Story and scored her breakout role as Kate Pearson on This Is Us. She's focused on forgiving the people for her own 'sanity' instead of holding on to the hate in her life. 'I think you can focus on letting go of someone first and then forgive the person in your own time' she writes. 'Because carrying hate is a heavy load but offering forgiveness is freeing.' She's done this particularly with her father who she was shocked told the National Enquirer last year that she had abandoned him. This Is Me: Loving the Person You Are Today published by Harper Collins will hit shelves on March 27 'But reading the article where he talks about all the times he reached out I had to wonder what his real intention was' she writes. She says that Mark 'never once said he was sorry because he obviously doesn't feel like he did anything wrong'. 'I don't have to be in a relationship with him' Metz writes. 'I can't meet him where he is but I can also move forward.' Metz appears as Kate Pearson on NBC's hit drama This Is Us. She is also appearing in two upcoming films and had a re-occurring role on Ryan Murphy's American Horror Story.
